Group “HOROWITZ – DEBUT”

October 24 – 29, 2008

 

 

1. Competition conditions

 

The Competition in Group “Horowitz-Debut” is opened to young pianists of all nationalities, born after October 24, 1994. 

The Competition in Group “Horowitz – Debut” is held in four separate groups.

The contestant may participate in one, two, three or four groups on condition of registration, casting of lots and payment the fee in every group.

For participation at the Competition it is necessary to send the following documents:

 -   enclosed Application form filled out by block letters with duration of each piece;

 -   copy of birth certificate;

 -   two black and white (half-length) glossy pictures, size 9x12  cm, suitable for printing in a booklet, and taken since 2008;

 -   copies of documents confirming previous competitions awards.

Deadline for applications is no later than 10 September, 2008 according the postmark.

Pretenders who have currently or within the 2 years preceding the Competition been students or are relative of a Jury member are not allowed to take part at the Competition.

The Administration of the Competition will not accept any responsibility for lost documents.

Incomplete sets of documents and documents sent with a delay will not be considered.

Administration doesn’t provide participants with a medical insurance.

After examining applications the Administration determines the participants and sends them invitations no later than October 1, 2008. List of competitors will be placed on the web site of the Competition: www.horowitzv.org

All participants who will receive invitation must notify the Administration about the exact date and time of their arrival to the Competition till October 10, 2008. Foreign participants will be responsible for getting their own passports and visas. Applicants should contact the nearest Embassy or Consulate of Ukraine for advice.

The Competition Fee is US $30 or the equivalent of the sum according to the exchange rate in the National Bank of Ukraine and is paid during registration.

The registration and casting of lots of the contestants will be held from 8 a.m. till 1 p.m. on October 24, 2008 at the Administration office: Kyiv, 31 Tolstogo str.   

All participants’ stay as well as the stay of their accompanying persons during the Competition will be covered at their own expense.

Rehearsals at the Competition Concert Hall are not provided.

 

2. The Jury

 

The Jury of the Competition works according “Regulations of the Jury”. The Jury staff will be announced at the latest July 15, 2008 .

The Jury estimates participants' performances by closed vote

during all rounds.

The Jury may interrupt a competitor’s performance for reasons such as overrunning the allowed time. The Jury’s decisions are final and cannot be questioned at all stages of the Competition.           

 

3.  Repertory Requirements

 

             1st Group  “A” Elementary

         Program of the participant’s choice.

         Performance duration – 10 minutes.       

       

             2nd Group “B” Elementary

       Program of the participant’s choice with    

       obligatory performance of Etude.

        Performance duration –15 minutes.

 

              3rd  Group “C” Advanced

        Program of the participant’s choice with     

        obligatory performance:

       - Sonata (1st or 2nd-3rd parts) or variations;

       - Virtuoso composition

        Performance duration –25 minutes.

 

          4th  Group “D” Advanced

      Performance of a part of concerto for piano with orchestra (accompanied by another piano).


Winners of the Group take part in the Closing Concert with the orchestra in the M.Lysenko National Philharmonic Hall of Ukraine.

 

The winners of the Competition in group “Horowitz - Debut” will take diplomas and gifts, and take part in the Closing Concert of the Competition.

The Administration of the Competition has the right to engage the winners in concert activity during season 2008-2010.

The Administration has an exclusive right to all audio and video records of Competition’s performances; they are property of the International Charitable Fund of Vladimir Horowitz Competition.

The Administration has an exclusive right to sign contracts with other parts with the aim to realization above materials.

No fee is provided to competitors for use by the Administration the Competition’s materials.

 

ATTENTION! Program presented in the application may not be changed during the Competition. In case of contradictions in the interpretation of these Conditions, the Ukrainian text is considered to be only correct one.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

JUNIOR GROUP (October 24 – October 31, 2008)

 

1. Competition conditions

 

The Competition in the Junior Group is opened to young pianists of all nationalities, born between  October 24, 1993 and October 24, 1999.

The Administration of the Competition will select participants on the basis of received documents.

Candidates should provide the following documents: 

-   enclosed Application form filled out by block letters with duration of each piece;

 -   copy of birth certificate or passport;

 -   copies of documents confirming previous competitions awards.

A list of competitors who do not attend the Competition, without adequate notice or reason, will be given to the European Union of Music Competitions for Youth for circulation among members.

The Competition Fee is US $70 or the equivalent of the sum according to the exchange rate in the National Bank of Ukraine and is paid during registration.

The registration and casting of lots of the contestants will be held from 8 a.m. till noon on October 24, 2008 at the Administration office: Kyiv, 31 Tolstogo str.

The sequence of participants’ performances is determined by casting of lots and remains until the end of the Competition.

The competition's auditionsare open to the public.

Repertoire must be played from memory.

Program of the Third Round is performed accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra.

Prize winners of the Competition are obligated to take part in Closing Concert and accept offered concert engagements which form an integral part of the prize.

 

2. The Jury

3. Administration

 

The Direction of the Competition provides free of charge with:

-   accommodation and two meals a day (breakfast, lunch) to competitors accepted for the 1st Round while he/she is taking part at the Competition;

 -  acoustic rehearsals (10min.) before the 1st Round and one rehearsal with the orchestra for participants of the 3rd Round in the Competition Concert Halls.

The Administration has an exclusive right to all audio and video records of Competition’s performances, they are property of the International Charitable Fund of Vladimir Horowitz Competition.

The Administration has an exclusive right to sign contracts with other parts with the aim to realization above materials.

No fee to competitors is provided for use by the Administration the Competition’s materials.

 

4. Prizes

 

1st Prize -$2,000 USA, the title of the prize winner and the Gold Medal;

2nd Prize - $1,500 USA, the title of the prize winner and the Silver Medal;

3rd Prize - $1,000 USA, the title of the prize winner and the Bronze Medal;

4th Prize - $600 USA, the title of the prize winner;

5th Prize - $300 USA, the title of the prize winner;

6th Prize - $150 USA, the title of the prize winner.

 

The Prizes are awarded according to the Jury’s decision.

Depending on competitors’ achieved results  and within limits of established amount of prizes the Jury has the right to:

- not to award all prizes;

- divide awards (except the first prize) among competitors.

Sponsor Prizes and Encouragement Prizes are available. 

All Prizes are paid in the Ukrainian national currency with payment of income tax according to Ukrainian legislation.

 

5. Repertory Requirements

 

1st Round

1.      Bach. One Prelude and Fugue from Well-tempered  Clavier.

2.      Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven (of the participant’s choice). One Sonata in complete volume.

3.      Clementi, Czerny (op.740), Moshkovski, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov (of the participant’s choice). One virtuoso etude.

4.      A piece by Ukrainian composer.

 Performance duration up  to 25 minutes.

 

2nd Round

1.   Obligatory work (see enclosure № 2 “List of obligatory works for the Second Round”)

2.   One or more pieces by composers from Romantic period to today time.

Performance duration from 25 to 30 minutes.

 

 3rd Round

      1.   A concerto in complete volume (see enclosure № 3 “List of works for the Third Round” ).
