Requiements - Intermediate group

INTERMEDIATE GROUP (April 11 - April 26, 2010)

1. Competition conditions

The Competition in the Intermediate Group is opened to young pianists of all nationalities, born between April 11, 1991 and April 11, 1996.
The Competition consists of four stages: Qualification (Preliminary) Round is held by video records, 1st and 2nd Rounds - performances of solo programs, 3rd Round - performance accompanied by the symphony orchestra.

Selection of participants of Qualification Round is held by the Administration of the Competition on the basis of received documents. Candidates should provide the following documents:

-   professional video record (DVD) of program of the participant's choice, but with obligatory performance of virtuoso etude; performance duration - from 10 to 15 minutes; the record should be made not earlier than 2008;

-   enclosed Application form filled out by block letters with duration of each piece;

 -   xerocopy of birth certificate or passport;

 -   two black and white (half-length) glossy pictures, size 9x12  cm, suitable for printing in a booklet, and taken not earlier than 2009;

 -   xerocopies of documents confirming previous competitions awards.

Pretenders who within the 2 years preceding the Competition were or currently are students of a Jury member  or have family relationship with a Jury member are not allowed to take part in the Competition.

The Administration of the Competition will not accept any responsibility for lost documents.

Incomplete sets of documents and documents sent with a delay will not be considered.

ATTENTION!

Program of performances in rounds presented in the Application cannot be changed during the competition.

Administration does not provide participants with a medical insurance.

Video records and documents are not returned.

Qualification Round - selection by video records (DVD) will take place in Kyiv in January 2010. Having examined results of Qualification Round the Administration determines participants of the First Round of the Competition and sends them invitations by March 1, 2010.
List of competitors will be placed on the web site of the Competition: www.horowitzv.org

All participants who will receive invitation must notify the Competition Administration about the date of their arrival to the Competition by April 1, 2010. A list of competitors who do not attend the Competition, without adequate notice or reason, will be given to the World Federation of International Music Competitions for circulation among members.

Foreign participants will be responsible for obtaining their own passports and visas. Applicants should contact the nearest Embassy or Consulate of Ukraine for advice.

The Competition Fee is US $100 and is to be paid in cash during registration.

The registration and casting of lots of the contestants will be held from 8.00 a.m. till 01.00 p.m. on April 11, 2010 at the Administration office: Kyiv, 31 Tolstogo str.

The sequence of participants' performances is determined by casting of lots and remains until the end of the Competition.

The competition's auditions are open to the public.

Repertoire must be played from memory.

Program of the Third Round is performed accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra.

Prize winners of the Competition are obligated to take part in Closing Concert and accept offered concert engagements which form an integral part of the prize.

2. The Jury

The Jury of the Competition works according to the "Regulations on the Jury".

The Jury estimates participants' performances by closed vote during all rounds.

The Jury may interrupt a competitor's performance for reasons such as overrunning the allowed time. The Jury's decisions are final and cannot be questioned at all stages of the Competition.   

3. Administration

The Administration of the Competition provides free of charge with:

-   accommodation to competitors accepted for the 1st Round while he/she is taking part at the Competition;

 -  acoustic rehearsals (10min.) before the 1st Round and one rehearsal with the orchestra for participants of the 3rd Round in the Competition Concert Halls.

The Administration has an exclusive right to all audio and video records of Competition's performances, they are property of the International Charitable Fund of Vladimir Horowitz Competition.

The Administration has an exclusive right to sign contracts with other parts with the aim to advertise or sell out above-mentioned materials.

No fee to competitors is provided for use of the Competition's materials by the Administration.

4. Prizes

1st Prize - $4,000 USA, the title of the prize winner and the Gold Medal;

2nd Prize - $2,500 USA, the title of the prize winner and the Silver Medal;

3rd Prize - $1,500 USA, the title of the prize winner and the Bronze Medal;

4th Prize - $1,000 USA, the title of the prize winner;

5th Prize - $700 USA, the title of the prize winner;

6th Prize - $500 USA, the title of the prize winner.

The Prizes are awarded according to the Jury's decision.

Depending on competitors' achieved results and within limits of established amount of prizes the Jury has the right to:

- not to award all prizes;

- divide awards (except the first prize) among competitors.

All Prizes are paid in the Ukrainian national currency with payment of income tax according to Ukrainian legislation.

5. Repertory Requirements 

Qualification Round (video records on DVD)

Program of the participant's choice with obligatory performance of a virtuoso etude.

Performance duration - from 10 to 15 minutes.

First Round

1.      Bach. One Prelude and Fugue from Well-tempered Clavier.

2.      Clementi, Hummel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven (of the participant's choice). One Sonata in complete volume.

3.      Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Debussy, Stravinsky, Ligetti (of the participant's choice). One virtuoso etude.

4.      A piece by Ukrainian composer.

Performance duration - up to 30 minutes.

Second Round

1.   Obligatory work (see Attachment № 2 "List of Obligatory Works for the Second Round")

2.   One or more pieces by composers from Romantic period to present time.

Performance duration - from 30 to 35 minutes.

Third Round

1.   A concerto in complete volume (see Attachment № 3 "List of Works for the Third Round").

ATTENTION!

In case of contradictions in the interpretation of these Conditions, the Ukrainian text is the only correct one.
